My trip to a Bavarian village

Updated: Oct 22

My friend Ann and I decided to go up to Helen, Georgia, a picturesque little town built like a Bavarian village. Helen is located in the beautiful north Georgia mountains.

Our first stop was to stop by a wonderful farmer's market on the way: Jaemor Farm Market.

So many vegetables! There were also homemade cakes and candies. But my favorite thing was in the back, where they had homemade peach pies and homemade peach ice cream!

We both had a homemade peach pie. Yum, yum!

We bought a basket of peaches to take with us. And then, we headed on up to Helen.

There were several candy shops in Helen. The one below was my favorite. The first thing I thought of, once I was inside was my grandmother. She was famous for her homemade chocolate fudge and sweet white Divinity. And they had BOTH there. Yum, yum. They gave us samples, I guess to entice us to buy, WHICH WE DID!

Please excuse those dots on the picture below. It was raining and those are water drops on the windshield.

It seemed like every building had a German Bavarian theme. I loved it.

In addition to the "main drag", there were little mazes that took us here and there.

They had horses and carriages that would take you around (for a fee, of course)

Even the restrooms were beautifully detailed.

Helen sits right on the Chattahoochee River (which flows by Atlanta). And you could rent a raft and float down the river. As you can see, people were taking advantage of it.

And right on the river, sat two or three different restaurants. I really liked their out door cafe.

But despite the outdoor cafe, Ann and I ended up at The Troll Cavern, which was downstairs from the above restaurant. We both had German type sandwiches, even with sauerkraut.

Not my favorite. But it was hot outside and I was happy to be in there.

After lunch, it was time to go shopping

We went in jewelry stores, candy stores, souvenir shops, antique shops, and western shops such as the one below.

The one below was one of my favorites, with upscale "doo dads". This shop sat just adjacent to a hotel, both of which were housed in an old building. It had such an ambiance!

After leaving there, we stopped for some ice cream.

And on to more shopping and browsing: down another maze.

But of all the shops, this one, below was my favorite. They had beautiful pottery and vases: Windmill Dutch Imports

After several hours of fudge, German food, lots of sightseeing, window shopping and people watching, it was time to head on back home. So we said good buy to this beautiful little village and headed out.
