I really enjoyed my trip to St Augustine. Look at that pelican above. Isn't it beautiul.
I had some free points with my Best Western Rewards account so we used them at this beautiful Best Western. Such a beautiful property and we were there for two days.
One of the first things we did was to go to the centuries old light house, several hundred years old. We could have climbed to the top because there was a stairway taking us there but we didn't take the climb.
Then we headed into town. They say that St Augustine is the oldest city in America, having been founded in the 1500's. Such architechture!!
And this cathedral, below, is one of the oldest, if not THE oldest in America.
I'll have pictures of the inside, later on in this blog. But notice below, there were trolley cars up and down the boulevard and many people waiting to get on them.
The building, below, was a museum about the city. We took the tour and really enjoyed it.
These very old back streets were probably my favorite. We dashed in and out of shops and alleys many years old. Such a great atmosphere.
I mentioned that I'd have pictures of the inside of the cathedral. And here they are. The tour guide told us that the reason the roof was red was because at the time this cathedral was built, Spain occupied this area and red was their official color.
Just remember that this interior is 600 years old. Isn't that interesting?!
After we left the cathedral, we headed for some lunch and we found this pizza place down one of small side streets. And we enjoyed it very much, as much for the atmosphere as for the food.
Then we headed over to Flagler College. In the 1800's it was a very fancy hotel for the rich and was later changed into a college.
More trolley cars . . .
This picture, below was the interior as we entered Flagler College. Just remember this was the interior of a very fancy hotel in the 1800's.
After we left, we headed over to this fortress, built hundreds of years ago. I love history, don't you!!
And then to the beach. I loved all of the birds flying in hoping to find some dinner; especially the pelicans. I noticed that the water on this side of Florida seemed to be dirtier than on the gulf side. But it was still nice.
After two days of restaurants, museums, sightseeing, street walking and the beach, it was time to say goodbye to St Augustine.
